The Norfolk village of Thelveton has a rich history which dates back before the Domesday Book, although in the early days it was known as Telvetun and was little more than an agricultural village. In the first half of the 19th century the village hosted its own race meetings, initially on Monday 2nd April 1832, with a much grander meeting on Tuesday 17th March 1835. That later meeting was billed as ‘Scole Steeplechases’ although the course started at Sturston Common and after crossing the Waveney headed to the turnpike road before progressing towards Thelveton. Over 6000 attended the meeting which began with a 4 mile steeplechase which was won by Matilda for Mr G St V Wilson. The second race was between 2 red flags positioned at Thrandeston and Mellis, a distance of 4 miles. The race was won by Fortunate Youth for Mr J Blake. After racing a sumptuous dinner was served at the Scole Inn.
